The scientific name of HON ZANG ZI is Antrodia camphorata (Antrodia cinnamomea), it is also known as "chang-chih", "chang-ku", or red camphor fungus. Of those, Antrodia camphorata is recognized as the best.  
Antrodia camphorata is a valuable stain native to Taiwan – Polyporaceae, Antrodia, Antrodia camphorata. It is only found in Taiwan, and so the name“the treasure of Taiwan's forest, priceless treasure” is given.  
Wild Antrodia camphorata only grow inside the trunk of Cinnamomum kanehirae trees in forests around the altitude 450-1,500m; Antrodia camphorata may also be found on dead trunk or wood of the Cinnamomum kanehirae.  
The forms of Antrodia camphorata fruiting bodies are variable, no stem, and attached tightly on the wooden surface. The surrounding region of the fruiting body usually appears to be radial rolled, growing outward in all directions.  
Through the modern isolation technology, Antrodia camphorata is known to possess a lot of active ingredients. For example, triterpenoids, polysaccharides, adenosine, vitamins (such as vitamin B, niacin), proteins (immunoglobulins), superoxide dismutase (SOD), minerals (such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron) and nucleic acid, etc.; of those, the most important ingredient is triterpenoids.  
Antrodia camphorata contains several excellent active ingredients, especially Antrodia camphorata that possesses a high amount and multiple types of triterpenoids; it is the best of Antrodia camphorata. Since triterpenoid appears to be red, it is also known as red Antrodia camphorata. The functionality is varied by the structure and type of triterpenoid; therefore, the efficacy and quality of Antrodia camphorata are not assessed by the quantity only.

Following the spirit of evidence based medicine, significant differences are found on the quality and efficacy of Antrodia camphorata depending on its strain, cultivation method, medium design, environmental condition, and extraction procedures. Therefore, the quality assessment of Antrodia camphorata should include the safety tests, cellular functional test, animal test and human clinical trial on its ingredients to make a combined and conclusive standard.

In the past, the late Professor Hung-Che Chiang from the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan Normal University, and his students studied the triterpenoids of Antrodia camphorata. In 1995, they identified three triterpenoids (antcins A, B, &C) and two known components (lanostanoids). Later, they identified further four triterpenoids (antcins E & F, methyl antcinates G & H).
Dr. Tun-Tschu Chang of Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture, stated that the assessment of Antrodia camphorata fruiting body was mainly focused on

The DNA sequence of Antrodia camphorata fruiting body from Well Shine Biotech was proved by the Food Industry Research and Development Institute to be 100% matched to the DNA sequence of wild Antrodia camphorata strain.
Meanwhile, we followed the instruction of Dr. Yueh-Hsiung Kuo, from the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University, on the method of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to analyze the existence of antcins A , B ,&C. After confirmation of the results, Antrodia camphorata fruiting body from Well Shine was proved to contain antcins A , B, &C – the components were stable with reproducible features. In conclusion, the evidence based studies show that Antrodia camphorata fruiting bodies from Well Shine Biotech is real.
Recent scientific analysis and studies proved that Antrodia camphorata possess more nutrients, such as triterpenoid, than that found in Ganoderma lucidum. Studies of Dr. Ching-Hua Su from Taipei Medical University discovered that the triterpenoid quantity and type of Antrodia camphorata fruiting body are the most unique features of the fungus; it is also the reason for the wide range of applications by local people.
In order to keep the valuable fungal strains, the government already inhibits the public to collect or sell the endangered wild Antrodia camphorata; therefore, only artificial cultivation may fulfill the demand of the public on Antrodia camphorata fruiting bodies. Professor Ching-Hua Su from the Departent of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University stated that the early artificial cultivation usually involved liquid fermentation to cultivate Antrodia camphorata hypha; although polysaccharides were extracted, the most valuable component of Antrodia camphorata, triterpenoid, was almost missing. There are numerous published medical studies proved that Antrodia camphorata triterpenoid promoted human health; it also supported the multiple healthcare applications of local people using Antrodia camphorata.
